Darwin: The Secular Messiah

February 12, 2009, marks the 200th  anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. To celebrate and commemorate his birth, the media will undoubtedly inundate society with messianic-like pronouncements from his famous book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life, published 150 years ago. The complete title of Darwin’s book is rarely published today because of its insidious racist message. This elevated Darwinian aura also accounts for the talk today that deals with establishing February 12th as an international holiday, called Darwin Day, which would commemorate his birth. But, the ultimate aim of Darwinists is the elimination of Christianity and replacing it with secular humanism.

Accompanying this celebration will be a barrage of information proclaiming his theory of evolution as the foundational basis for the biological sciences. Several universities in South Carolina have already dedicated a whole week to Darwin celebrations in recent years. The Creation Study Group’s presentation in January and the three-day Creation seminar in March will help counter this Darwinian deluge and ground Christians in their faith in the Bible as the Word of God and Jesus Christ as Creator and Redeemer.

Remember that Darwinian evolution states that the random chance combinations of molecules over long periods of time have resulted in all the diverse life forms we see today. Along with this indoctrination concerning Darwinian evolution, society will undoubtedly continue to hear the message that derides and ridicules any mention of creation and a Creator God. A recent quote from Dr. Arthur Caplan, the chairman of the Medical Ethics Department at the University of Pennsylvania, is typical of the anti-creation message. He states that, “Creationism may pose the greatest threat to the future of our children, your health, and the nation’s economy.” This absurd and outrageous statement typifies the tragic and unscientific mindset that is all too prevalent in most universities worldwide.

It has been said, “None is as blind as he who refuses to see.” Unfortunately this is most applicable today in the battle of the mind for the origin of life. It is obvious that a key component of the scientific method, observation, is discarded and ignored when dealing with origins, and especially the creation of man. The Biblical account of creation states that only mankind was created in God’s image and is God conscious. As a result, mankind is accountable to the Creator. Thus, the remarkable, unique characteristics of being human attest to our special creation.

The differences that set us apart from all other life forms are many. Besides mankind’s highly developed brain, which includes emotions, his complex anatomical design enables him to walk uprightly. This frees up and allows another complex structure, the hand, to put into action the thoughts and dictates of the mind. So when God gave man the directions to subdue and develop the earth, He also uniquely created in man the anatomical and physiological attributes to carry out this mandate. Again, observation shows us the obvious: the Biblical record is totally accurate. Mankind is obeying God’s instructions and is subduing and developing the earth. The evidence is overwhelming. Cities, technology, music, art, and medicine, are all designed, developed and constructed by man. What an awesome testimony to man being created in God’s image and fulfilling His mandate to subdue the earth. Yet, for evolutionists the origin of these special attributes of man remains a total mystery.

Another area that merits discussion is the explanation of death. Darwinian evolution requires death for “survival of the fittest” and evolutionary progress but, then, can’t explain it. Many biology textbooks completely avoid the topic. Evolutionists are completely in the dark about the why of this all encompassing feature of life. Yet, all living entities have life spans ending in death. The question is, “Why is there death?” Only Scripture gives us the answer. The book of Genesis tells us of the special relationship that God had with Adam and Eve, the first human couple, and the special instructions to obey Him. Disobedience would result in death. Scripture makes us all aware of the tragedy that occurred in the Garden of Eden. Thus, Scripture clearly answers the why of death.

In conclusion, the process of scientific observation clearly reinforces the Biblical record. Only an extremely biased, closed mind will rule out what is plainly seen — that God created the universe and everything in it. And Christ, the Word, who was with God in the beginning of the creation, is the real Messiah.
