Dr. Bolton Davidheiser went home to be with our LORD on August 16, 2007 at the age of 95 years in La Mirada, California. A memorial service was held August 25th. Dr. John Morris and Dr. Duane Gish represented the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) and read the contributions of those who could not personally attend. Providentially, our Creation Study Group (CSG) Secretary, Gwen Johnson, who was in California visiting her parents, attended these services with them; thus CSG was represented. Gwen’s mother, Beverly, and uncles, Gene and Jay Beaumont, had been blessed with Dr. Davidheiser’s brilliance and godly example while they were students at Westmont College. Mrs. Joan Mulfinger, of the Bob Jones University music faculty, sent a personal memoir regarding her and her late husband, George’s, long-time friendship with the Davidheisers. George, like Bolton, had suffered academic reprisals for his uncompromising stand for Biblical Creation. An excerpt of my remembrances of Bolton follows.
Bolton Davidheiser Reminiscences
Memorial Service, August 25, 2007
It has been my privilege to have had Dr. Bolton Davidheiser for a friend and colleague in the many years we have battled for truth together in the Creation vs. Evolution controversy. I came to Christ much as he did: a theistic evolutionist who was convinced by God’s Word to trust our Creator and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and His deity before learning that the objective facts of science support Creation rather than Evolution.
Dr. Davidheiser’s writings along with Rev. Walter Lang’s Bible-Science Newsletter, ICR’s Acts & Facts, Back to Genesis, Impact and the Creation Research Society Quarterly were among the periodicals that helped me learn that truth. His informative newsletter, News and Notes of Interest to Christians, was among my favorite reading materials then, and I was so disappointed when it became necessary for him to cease publishing such incisive information. His fascinating books, Evolution and Christian Faith, and Science and the Bible, continue as timely references in my Bible-Science Library, a function of my Creation Health Foundation. He also introduced me to the excellent, cult-exposing publication, The Discerner, which I continue to receive and keep in my library to this day.
A couple of decades ago my wife, Anne, and I attended a Creation convention in the Los Angeles area. Bolton and his wife, Jo, invited us with fellow contenders for Creation, George and Joan Mulfinger, to stay in their home. What a pleasure it was to enjoy their kind hospitality and a visit to Disneyland with their sons John and Daniel!
As a kind and gentle Professor with impeccable credentials (A.B. from Swarthmore and Ph.D. in Zoology with emphasis on Genetics from The Johns Hopkins University), he, nonetheless, has been a lion against the compromising of Biblical Truth by Christian educators in their attempts to accommodate a Scriptural agreement with old-universe evolutionism. His integrity in this matter caused him to leave his professorships at Westmont and Biola Colleges. Yet, he continued to teach, riding his bicycle, even in his mid eighties, to a Baptist high school, established to instruct and rehabilitate young misfits.
On April 16, 1998, our Creation Study Group in Greenville, SC, was privileged to have Dr. Davidheiser as our speaker. His topic was, “Dr. Hugh Ross vs. the Genesis Account.” His presentation, a condensation of his monograph on that topic, exposed the theological heresies and scientific blunders of Dr. Hugh Ross and the “mere creationists.” Such exposure is sorely needed in these perilous last days.
What a joy it was to host his stay here! We joked about absent-minded professors. A comment he made then that he found eating nuts in the evening interfered with a good night’s sleep intrigued me then and has intrigued me occasionally ever since. He and his family have long been in our regular prayers, and they are with all of you now. Won’t it be wonderful when Christ returns soon, and we shall be united together with Him and each other, including our dear Bolton Davidheiser and all the saints, with no more parting sorrows for all eternity?
In reply to Christ’s encouraging words, “Surely I come quickly,” in Revelation 22:20, we can join with the Apostle John in exclaiming, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
